We also asked for no Rain Dance. It got quite popular.

Now what we are going to say may seem unpopular at start, but do bear with us and read through.

We happened to take a closer looks at RainDance during Holi in Mumbai Housing Societies.

What we found changed our mind.

Scenario 1: Regular Holi / Dry Holi.

Residents gather at a common area, play Holi, enjoy the Music and Dance, they go back to their own Apartments and wash up.

Water Usage by each Flat = 1.5X

Hence, Load on Sewage Treatment Plant = 1.5X

Electricity used for pumping up the extra water = 1.3X

Water Usage to clean all common area in each Block, Lifts = Substantial.

Getting the flow..? Do read on.

Scenario 2: Regular Holi / Dry Holi PLUS Rain Dance

Residents gather at a common area, play holi, enjoy the Music and Dance. At the end, there is a 30-45 minutes Rain Dance where everyone who played Holi join in, dance or simply stand and enjoys the cool sprinkles in the hot sun.

The infrastructure for the Raindance is 1-2 Tankers that supply a mesh of pipes arranged on a bamboo structure.. The pipes have small holes through which water sprinkles down. A standalone generator and pump gets the water around the mesh.

That’s simply a Community Shower! Does remind us of the cheeky saying " Save Water, Shower Together"..

If timed well, the same amount of Water gets used as in Scenario 1.

But the Electricity for pumping up Water to an Overhead Tank 20-30 floors up, is saved.

The water needed to clean up Common Area of each Block or Lift is saved.

The plumbing infrastructure is spared from the sudden load.

AND! If planned well the raindance waste water can be channeled away into soft soil rather than enter the Sewage Treatment Plant!

So if your Cultural Committee plans it well, RainDance could actually be a smart way of tackling the Water Usage during Holi!

What do you think?

Happy Rang Barse this Holi!

Last year, we urged Housing Societies to play Dry Holi.
