People have been working at domestic household for over thousands of years and have always played a major part in managing the day to day activity of the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some work part-time, while others full time and at times the combined work hours exceed over 16 hours! Yet this is frequently seen that these people reside in the lowest salary bracket without any employee benefits working week-in week-out without any respite. She coined domestic jobs as \u201cWork like any other &#8211; work like no other\u201d adding further that this is exactly like a regular job and demands the regularities of a normal job. Even though the domestic staff increases the productivity of our homes and we can be at peace while we are away working, we fail to recognize the hard work that is put in by these people every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_discussion_also_triggered_a_monumental_feat_that_for_the_first_time_ever_in_India_a_formal_Code_of_Conduct_on_Domestic_Staff_Welfare_was_proposed_in_a_public_forum\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discussion also triggered a monumental feat that, <\/span><b>for the first time ever in India, a formal Code of Conduct on Domestic Staff Welfare was proposed in a public forum.<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another speaker of the day on Domestic Staff Welfare topic was Ms. Parijatha, a \u201cNirbhaya Award\u201d winner and a former Labor Welfare Officer in the Garments industry. She elucidated that not only a lot of them face abuse on an everyday basis, but also the worst case being minors being dragged into it illegally by the agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_Unveilings_from_the_Domestic_Staff_Welfare_Discussion\"><\/span>Some Unveilings from the Domestic Staff Welfare Discussion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Part-time Workers working in several households every day receive minimum wage and struggle to make ends meet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Full-time Workers, have to work from morning till night sometimes exceeding more than 14-16 hours. Mostly they are migrants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another scenario is that a lot of these are domestic help are minors who dragged in by the agencies and the worst case is that a lot of times they don\u2019t even get paid for work.<\/span><\/span> Parijatha stated the story of <i>Phoolmuni<\/i>, who in spite of working every day from the age of 15, never earned a penny. All the money was paid directly by the employers to the agency and she finally committed suicide when she was 16.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Proposed_Code_of_Conduct_on_Domestic_Staff_Welfare\"><\/span>Proposed Code of Conduct on Domestic Staff Welfare<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judging by the learnings from the expert sessions headed by Geeta and Parijatha, it was imperative that a formal Code of Conduct should be in place. Neighborhoods of Tomorrow organized by ADDA, therefore, achieved an enormous achievement that for the first time ever in India, a formal Code of Conduct was discussed and a basic draft was done. The first draft included the following points:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defined working hours for domestic staffs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paid leaves and weekends off <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defined minimum Salary<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits like maternity leave, health insurance etc<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increments and bonus like any other labor<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intimation from both parties in case of long breaks or leaving the job<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case of theft or breach of terms, instead of suspecting the domestic staff without any inquiry, a process should be made where the MC can form a subgroup to talk to both the parties before involving law and accusing the domestic staff. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defined scope of work &#8211; expectations, responsibilities etc<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\"><strong> <a title=\"Domestic Staff Welfare\" href=\"\/\/www.slideshare.net\/secret\/k9VEErYQX7jUPF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Domestic Staff Welfare<\/a> <\/strong> at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/apartmentadda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADDA Neighborhoods of Tomorrow, 2018<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Breath_of_Fresh_Air\"><\/span>A Breath of Fresh Air<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; and this certainly holds true in this case also. <a href=\"http:\/\/adda.io\/blog\/2018\/09\/rise-high-stories-domestic-staff-welfare\/\">Some Gated Communities are working closely with the Domestic and HouseKeeping Staff<\/a> to improve their socio-economic conditions which have proved to be extremely impactful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shriram Spurthi from Bangalore and Oceaus Heights from Thiruvananthapuram, in particular, are doing some exemplary work to improve conditions for their In-house and Domestic Staff. Some of their wonderful activity includes distribution of the rental brokerage money to distribute evenly amongst the staffs, make them a part of the Apartment Celebrations like residents, health checkups and consultation for stress and financial management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is therefore seen that the Apartment Residents are the driving force behind improving the conditions of the domestic staff.
