Chennai – a city that has been in the news way too much recently is home to some of the richest cultural chapters that this country ever witnessed. The heart of the art and creative community and even the south Indian film industry, this city is a popular choice among south Indians to settle permanently. If you’ve bought a house in this famous city, congratulations! We’ll now help you with transferring electricity meter to your name in the most straightforward way. MIND IT, we do not encourage the method that involves bribe. We do not need to pay any extra cash to an officer at the counter to do his/her job that the Govt. is anyway paying him to do. It may be easier and convenient, but as law abiding citizens we should refrain from any such illicit practices. So here we go!

Transferring Electricity Meter to Your Name in Chennai?
1. Mitron! Paperwork!
No official Govt. matter gets done here without paperwork and documentation. So to get the electricity meter transferred to your name here is the list of documents that you’ll need to prepare. You may not need all of them in the first step, but we recommend that you keep the papers ready before you even pay the first visit to the electricity board office.
- Copy and original of the payment receipt of last electricity bill
- Attested copy of the sale deed of the house to prove ownership
- Copy of last tax receipt
- Copy of card issued by electricity board
- An indemnity bond on stamp paper of value INR 80/- (easily sourced from any notary office)
- NOC from the individual in whose name the meter is currently in
- Attested copies of address and ID proof
Although optional, we recommend that you take a picture of the electricity meter in print and carry that along with you for safety.
Also, we came across a few homeowners who had purchased the house a few years back and was only trying to get the meter name transferred much later. Some of them found out that the previous meter holder is no more. Should that happen to you, you’ll need to find a copy of the previous holder’s death certificate, which should then be duly attested before presenting at the electricity board office.
You will also need to fill out a copy of the Form U (it should auto download as soon as you click this link). Fill it out clearly and carry it along with you. Place all documents together in a file for convenience.
2. Time To See The Officials
Once all that paperwork is ready , proceed to the nearest electricity board office. Approach the Assistant Engineer (AE) there and submit a letter requesting name transfer of meter and the file containing all the documents you prepared. (S)He will then direct you to pay the fee towards transfer of name which you should pay and then collect the receipt.
The official website currently lists that the fee is INR 200/-, you may want to check the website before you pay the sun the AE quotes. As soon as the officer quotes the fee, ask whether a receipt will be provided.
3. Concluding The Process
Any further instruction will be given to you after the payment has been made. If everything in the documents meets the requirements, the AE will then direct the technician to visit your home to inspect your meter. These days, this step is completely overlooked in some cases. But it is okay. As soon as you pay the fee, you can check the status of your meter name change online.
Give it a week and the name change should be reflected by then. If not, grab those payment receipts and march to the electricity board office to ask some questions. Although it is highly unlikely that there will be a delay, it is safe to check the status of name change on a daily basis until you see the change.
