Community Champions: Green Innovations

by Kasturi Gulhane

In today’s concrete world, some communities are turning green living into an art form. Communities build gardens and parks, plant trees and flowers, and maintain lawn areas. However, as a part of ADDA’s Rise High Awards 2023, we identified a few Communities that have taken ‘being green’ to a whole new level. Let’s take a look at the unique green initiatives of these Communities.

Breathe Easy: Mahindra Splendour

With air purifying plants and a Bonsai Garden with over 200 exotic bonsai plants, this Community is applauded for consistently being awarded Mumbai’s Top society Garden Landscape by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai’s Municipal body since 2014.

Healing Naturally: L&T Eden Park Phase 1

Can you imagine a rainforest in the middle of the city?

Well, that’s exactly how it feels at L&T Eden Park – only this time with medicinal plants.

The Community’s ERWA took up this project to start a medicinal garden a few years ago and it was a major success! With more than 20 different plant species, you can cure yourself of cold, sore throat and more. This garden is a combination of beauty + utility for the residents!

Blooming and Bountiful: Kochar Panchsheel

From flowers to vegetables, you can find it all at Kochar Panchsheel.

  • Flower Garden – The Community welcomes its residents and guests with beautiful flowers at the entrance.
  • Propogation setup – This setup allows the Community to get new plants and greens regularly, reducing the spend on new plants.
  • Bonsai Garden –  a small area is allocated to bonsais, providing an aesthetic look to the Community.
  • Vegetable Garden – Free from chemicals and pesticides, the Community employs gardeners to grow completely organic greens, brinjals, tomatoes and more.

Trash to Treasure: Harjit Narang

This Community made ‘best from waste’ into a reality by making the best of 2 garbage dumps. Residents and Community members came together to clean up these places and develop them for the betterment of the Community. One of the dumps were transformed into a park with a walking track, and the second one was developed into a sports ground with a dedicated badminton court.

Green Living Redefined: Maimoon Gardens

Maimoon Gardens, you have plants not only in your common Community area but also at your home! The Community has a one of a kind Community Greenhouse, open to all residents to unwind and relax. The Greenhouse is equipped with hydroponic vertical plant units which cultivate organic fruits and vegetables. Residents themselves can grow plants in the Vertical Gardening unit provided to them, right in their balcony!

Sky is the limit: Shapoorji Pallonji Parkwest

Shapoorji Pallonji Parkwest

One of the most notable features of the gardens at Shapoorji Pallonji Parkwest is that the gardens are designed to conserve water, reduce erosion while improving plant life and quality through a composting program. The gardens are not limited to the ground level but also extend up to the building’s corridors which is both visually stunning and environmentally friendly.

Conclusion:

As we celebrate these Community Champions, it’s clear that their commitment to green innovations goes far beyond aesthetics—it’s about creating sustainable, healthy environments that enhance the quality of life for the Community. From air-purifying gardens to medicinal plant sanctuaries and repurposed green spaces, these communities are leading the way in reimagining urban living. Their efforts inspire us all to think creatively about how we can make our own surroundings greener and more sustainable.
