Setting the Ground Rules

First things first, for planning a party in an apartment complex, here are some ground rules to keep in mind.

(Though we’d be laying more stress on how to hold a party in an apartment complex, these rules apply to every home party)

  1. Stow the fancy speakers and big music systems. This is a party held at home. You can have music however, you don’t need to provide music to the neighbours!
  2. In a gathering of friends, the mood might become charged with excitement and we tend to get loud but yelling is prohibited.
  3. A noisy, hearty welcome to the new year at midnight is understandable, however after midnight its best to plan for some quieter games, events.
  4. If you plan to step outside, ensure that you don’t litter or trash public places. Common areas within your apartment are for the use of all residents, let’s keep it clean for them.
  5. If you plan to take the festivities to the poolside, ask permission in advance from the authorities
  6. Parking might be a problem for your guests. So talk to the security and management committee if any special arrangement can be made
  7. If you are expecting young kids, keep the place safe for everyone by hiding sharp, fragile things which might hurt or break easily.
  8. Your management committee might have put up some notices regarding New Year Celebrations in your apartment complex, in your ADDA. Do not forget to check that.

Must Haves For A Great Bash

1. Decor

Shimmer is the new black. It could be anything – drapes, cushion covers. Or just a string of fairy lights. Good lighting goes a long way in setting the ambience.

You could move some of the furniture away to make space for a makeshift dance floor. You might also want to make it look even more awesome with some dim lighting and even put up a shiny disco ball, to complete the effect!

And keep a large table ready (clean and draped in tablecloth) to serve keep the food and drinks.

2. Music

Music cannot be avoided. Make a playlist well in advance to avoid having to select tracks while entertaining your guests.

Download the latest hits from 2016 and save it in your playlist. Remember what we said above? Avoid raising the volume too much lest the neighbours come knocking (with an axe!).

3. Food

Cook or order, its better to get an idea of your guests food preferences, so that you have enough food ready for both vegetarian and vegetarian crowd. Make sure that you keep the veg and non-veg dishes separate too. Plan the menu ahead. Finger foods are a must. If people are crashing at your place, consider prepping breakfast too! Have some good wine ready for toasting at midnight.

4. Drinks

Take a count of how many of your guests would want to have drinks. In case of hard drinks you can follow the general rule of two drinks per guest during the first hour with one drink for every next hour. Also arrange for soft drinks or some mocktails for the non-drinkers.

5. Safety

Make sure that nobody goes home driving after drinking. Have their home numbers and a few cab service numbers handy. Follow up with everyone and make sure that everyone gets home safe and sound.

Activities For The Night

With loud music and other noises taken out of the equation, you might be left wondering about what can be done to spice up things. Here is a list of games and other activities you can do to have fun without causing inconvenience to your neighbours.

1. Group Games

Not antakshari or charades, they’re fine too. But everyone has already played them a million times. Try the more popular western choices like Mafia. There’s a Wiki page on it and trust us, it is not a silly kids game. It takes brains and some good amount of manipulation.

2. Chit-Chat

Discuss group stuff. It could be resolutions that you take together as a group – like doing charity or aiding charitable institutions. Or you could discuss ghost stories. This one never gets old. If you are gathering with family, there will be no dearth for topics.

3. Games for the lil’ ones!

Here’s a fun game to get the kids involved. Have them stand in a line and on the count on three shout out a word, the kids should pose like the word that was announced and stay immobile for a minute. Eg. Shout “Spoon”. Some kids would act as though they are putting something in the mouth, some would hold their hands as though they are using it on a plate, we don’t know. They’re kids, their brains work in amazing ways. It would be super fun!

4. Virtual Games

This one might be more apt for the boys, although. Play a few matches on your PlayStation, rent one if you don’t have a play station and try to beat each other’s score. This doesn’t involve too much noise, and it is always fun to defeat your friends! You can brag about it all the way into 2017!

Do not forget to however participate in your Apartment Complex’s new year celebrations. Your fellow owners might have some awesome events planned in your Complex for all neighbours.

And A Happy New Year

What we’ve given you is a just a bunch of ideas that you can use for your home party. It is always fun to rack your brains and come up with something fun for your own group.

Your year may have been one hell of a ride. It could have been happy for some, it could’ve been downright traumatic.

Remember, things will definitely get better. Before the year ends, gather around and take a moment to be thankful for everything that you have. From all of us here at ADDA, here’s wishing you the very best for 2017!
